The freedom of the press is an important tool for the democratic process. The founding fathers used the media of the day to promote the ideals they found necessary for the freedom of the country. Without the media there is no watchdog to protect the citizens and to hold government accountable to the people except the cycle of election and re-election.
The emergence of the web as a source of information is an exciting time to be a part of the media. The web enables ordinary citizens to voice thier opinions and share experiences without having to have millions of dollars to start a radio station, newspaper or television station. The web offers the democracratic control of media. The process of retrieving information from the web may be a messy process, but so is democracy, but at least you know that the information has not been altered due to self-interests of a conglomerate or product.
